New Academic Year, New Support: Why The Athlete Place Is Built for School Sport

Aug 27, 2026· 6 minutes

At the time of writing, we're heading into the final days of the summer break for schools. And, as sports staff, you will no doubt have crammed in as much of your own sporting interests as possible, or maxxed out some serious sport-watching downtime from the comfort of your favourite comfy chair!

But it's almost back-to-it time…

The Passion That Got You Here

For many, the new academic year brings refuelled enthusiasm and energy, and a motivation to deliver a programme that sees young people benefiting from and loving sport, as much as you did during your own school years… arguably THE reason you're in the role in the first place!

The Elephant in the Room… Workload

But there's always a balance that needs to be struck with that ever-present elephant in the room… staff workload. It's all very well returning with such enthusiasm, but if your ideas require more personal time and effort, that can soon become problematic, and something eventually gives.

Over the last year, we've had some genuinely great conversations with several of you, and it's honestly heartwarming that there are so many people out there committed to kids having a great school-sport experience. But the topic of workload invariably comes up… along with budget frustrations.

And Now, Online Safety Too

We've also become very aware of the additional pressures school staff are now under around the constantly changing and increasing online security and safeguarding requirements. No doubt you first entered the sector thinking your biggest frustrations would be forgotten kit and teenage over/under-enthusiasm… not online safety!

The Wide-Ranging Impact of School Sport

Our initial platform was created to provide peer-to-peer moral support during the challenges sport inevitably brings, somewhere kids could feel less alone with their struggles. Six years later, it has grown into a complete teen-athlete information and guidance platform, with content supporting both performance and wellbeing.

With a genuinely impressive sports network behind us, role models form a key part of what we deliver, because teens tend to shut out adult advice, but they'll listen to someone who's been there and done it.

None of this works if we lose sight of why school sport matters so much in the first place. Its effect on young people is enormous, and it goes way beyond the obvious.

Yes, there's the fun, the peer bonding, and the welcome break from academics in the timetable. But the real lasting impact comes from personal development: resilience, teamwork, and the ability to lead and lose gracefully, skills that follow these kids into job interviews and workplaces years later.

You already know this instinctively; it's probably part of why you're in this job now. And it's backed by the evidence too:

  • Youth Sport Trust's 2025 PE and School Sport report found that 73% of young people believe the skills they learn in PE help them in and outside of school (1)

  • And 96% of teachers agree that sport and play benefit children's mental wellbeing (1)

Schools provide the greatest breeding ground for that kind of growth, if it's handled effectively… That's where we hope we come in: making it easier for you to do a great job and have a real impact on kids' lives.

Why The Athlete Place Fits Your Programme

Over the last few years, we've listened to you and changed how and what we deliver.

Our goal is to become THE go-to resource for school sport departments, one that helps you convey your own knowledge and passion for sport in a way that adds as little extra workload as possible.

That's the heart of it: a ready-to-use content library covering performance and wellbeing, built and delivered with real athletes and role models, that you can drop straight into a PE lesson, an assembly, or a coaching session without spending your evening putting it together. Every piece is already researched and fact-checked specifically for teenage athletes, so there's no chasing down credible sources yourself; it's already done.

It's built to slot in alongside your existing sport programme, while also covering the ground that's difficult to justify: whether university or college is even the right route for them, what independence away from home actually looks like, even how to handle alcohol as a young athlete. These are topics schools rarely have the time, expertise, or inclination to go near, but they matter enormously to a sport-obsessed teenager. A resource that delivers real value for students well beyond just sport, and one you can defend at budget time.

The less time you spend building or vetting resources from scratch, the more you get back for the things only you can do: actually coaching, actually being there for your students.

Key Benefits of The Athlete Place

Simply put:

  • Caters to every sport, every ability level, not just the elite few

  • No special software or IT setup needed. It works on whatever devices your students already have

  • It’s priced for departments watching every pound, not just the schools with the biggest budgets

  • Covers subjects teens genuinely need that schools rarely have the time or expertise to teach themselves

Staying Ahead on Safety and Data

We feel your pain here, and we mean that literally. As an organisation trusted with young people's information every day, we've had to navigate the exact same rising bar on data protection and online safety that schools are now facing. We're not just offering sympathy from the sidelines; we're actively solving these same issues ourselves.

We've moved with the times. Over the past few months, we've changed how we deliver key parts of the platform to get ahead of the growing pressure around data storage and online safety for young people.

That timing matters. Keeping Children Safe in Education 2026, effective from 1 September 2026, brings in mandatory annual filtering and monitoring reviews, named accountability at senior leadership level, and explicit safeguards against risks from generative AI tools (2). We made the changes needed to meet that standard before it became a legal requirement, not after.

Being seen as a resource that's doing everything it can to stay one step ahead is incredibly important to us. The safety, wellbeing and happiness of young people is the absolute priority for The Athlete Place, and we intend to keep proving that, not just saying it.

Training is only part of the story.

Our platforms are built for young athletes who want to go further and the parents and coaches who help them get there.
